Help and support
Every message the app can show, what it means, and what to do about it.
Opening the app
The app reads the page or space you opened it from as you. If Confluence won’t show it to you, the app can’t either.
Page Order couldn’t start. This page couldn’t be found, or you can’t see it.
The page you opened it from — or, from the space sidebar, the space’s home page — couldn’t be read as you. It was deleted, it is restricted, or the space has no home page.
Open the page in Confluence yourself; if it doesn’t load there, it can’t load here. For a space with no home page, open Organize Child Pages from the ••• menu of a page in that space instead.
Page Order couldn’t start. That page no longer exists, or you can no longer see it. / Page Order couldn’t start. You don’t have permission to do that here.
Confluence answered “not found” or “not allowed” for the page or its space: it was removed, or your access to it changed.
Check the page in Confluence, and ask its owner or a space admin for view access if you need it.
Page Order couldn’t start. Confluence is busy. Wait a minute and try again.
Confluence kept answering that the app is over its rate limit, which every site using the app shares, even after the app waited and retried.
Wait a minute, then open it again. Nothing was changed.
This space’s home page couldn’t be found, or you can’t see it.
You chose a space under Apps, and its home page couldn’t be read as you. Page Order starts at the home page’s child pages, which are the space’s top level.
Open Organize Child Pages from the ••• menu of a page you can see in that space.
A space in the list can’t be selected
The space has no home page, so there is no top level to start from. Its Select stays unavailable.
Open Organize Child Pages from the ••• menu of a page in that space.
No spaces available.
The list shows only the spaces you can see, and leaves out archived ones. If the spaces couldn’t be read at all, the reason shows above the list, such as “Confluence is busy. Wait a minute and try again.”
Check that you have access to the space in Confluence. If a reason is shown, deal with that, then open Page Order again.
Policies has no child pages yet.
The page you opened has nothing beneath it, so there is nothing to sort.
Pick another page in the page tree, or one higher up in the breadcrumb. To put pages under this one, select them in their own parent and drop them on it, or use Move to….
Couldn’t load.
Reading that branch of the page tree failed: Confluence was busy for a moment, or the page was removed or restricted meanwhile. When the list of child pages itself can’t be read, it shows the reason in its place instead.
For the page tree, press Hide page tree and then Show page tree to read it afresh; it also re-reads every open branch after each save. For the list, open another page and then come back to this one, or reopen Page Order.
Page Order stopped unexpectedly.
Something went wrong inside the app itself while drawing the screen. The message underneath says “Nothing unsaved was sent to Confluence.” Anything you had already saved is safe in Confluence; unsaved changes are lost.
Press Reload. If it happens again, send the error text shown under the message to support@datapingo.com, as it asks.
Permissions
The app acts as you. If Confluence would refuse you, it refuses the app.
You can see this order but not change it. Moving pages needs Space admin or Manage all content in Team Handbook.
Confluence lets a person move pages in a space only if they are a space admin there, or have Manage all content where space roles are on — the same rule as its own Move. You have neither, so the list is read-only: no selecting, sorting or dragging. The same banner appears if the app couldn’t check your permission.
Ask a space admin for Manage all content in that space, or to make the change. If you should already have it, close the app and open it again so the check runs once more.
Pages I know exist don’t appear
Confluence returns only pages you can view, so restricted pages are invisible to you, and to the app. Drafts and archived pages aren’t in the page tree either.
Ask the page’s owner for view access, then open the parent again.
Sorting and dragging
Nothing here touches Confluence: every change waits in Unsaved changes until you save.
These pages are already A to Z. / The n selected pages are already A to Z.
The sort you chose wouldn’t change anything. Pages that tie keep their current order, so sorting a sorted list moves nothing.
Nothing to fix. If you expected numbers to sort differently, check Sort numbers by value: on, you get 2, 9, 10; off, 10, 2, 9 (the sort is then named “A to Z, letters only”).
Sort is greyed out
Exactly one page is selected: sorting needs none (for Sort all) or at least two (for Sort n selected). It is also unavailable when the list has fewer than two pages, while a check or a save is running, while a rename question is waiting for an answer, and when you can’t move pages in this space.
Clear the selection with the × beside Move to…, or select one more page.
Some items ended up at the bottom after a date sort
Whiteboards, databases and embeds share the page tree with pages, but the app reads no dates for them. Anything without a date goes last, in the order it already had.
Drag them where you want them before you save; a date sort and a hand-made order can go into the same save.
“…” and “…” can’t swap places: each has more than 1,000 pages beneath it, and Confluence can’t move a page like that, not even with its own Move. They keep their current order and everything else is arranged around them.
Your sort or drag would have swapped two pages that each have more than 1,000 items beneath them. Confluence won’t move either one, so their order relative to each other can’t change. See Limits.
The rest of your order still goes ahead. To swap those two, move some of their child pages out first.
Too big to move out / Too big to move inside a page: reorder only
The page has more than 1,000 items beneath it. You can still drag it up or down (the app moves the pages around it instead), but it can’t go into another page or space.
To move it elsewhere, move some of its child pages out first, then move it.
I dropped the pages and nothing moved
A drop only counts where a line (above or below a row) or a highlight (into a row) shows. Dropping on the dragged row itself, outside the list, or on the parent you are viewing in the page tree does nothing.
Drag again and let go once the line or the highlight appears. The top or bottom quarter of a row gives a line; its middle, on a page or folder, gives a highlight that puts the pages inside it.
Moving to another parent or space
Before a move is added to Unsaved changes, the app checks for what Confluence would refuse. Pages that can’t go are left out, and the move’s row says which and why.
This title is already used in Archive. Confluence won’t move a page there under the same title. Rename it and move, or leave it out?
Titles are unique in each space, ignoring capitals, and a page in the destination already has this one. With several pages it reads “n titles are already used in Archive.”
Choose Rename and move to give each the suggested free title, such as “Expenses (1)”, or Leave it out to move the rest without it. Answer it before making other changes.
n left out (title already used there) / “…” wasn’t moved: Archive already has a page with this title.
You chose Leave it out, or no free title was found from “(1)” to “(100)”. When nothing in the move could go, the panel says “n pages left out: Archive already has a page with the same title.”
Rename the page in Confluence, or move it again and choose Rename and move.
n left out (too big to move) / “…” wasn’t moved: it has n pages beneath it. Confluence can’t move a page with more than 1,000 pages beneath it, not even with its own Move. Move some of its child pages out first.
Confluence won’t move a page with more than 1,000 items beneath it, counting every level. With several such pages and nothing else to move, it reads “n pages weren’t moved (…): each has more than 1,000 pages beneath it, and Confluence can’t move a page like that, not even with its own Move. Move some of their child pages out first.”
Move some of its child pages somewhere else first, then move it.
n left out (can’t go inside itself) / “…” wasn’t moved: “…” is one of its own child pages, and a page can’t go inside itself.
The destination is beneath one of the pages being moved, and Confluence refuses that loop. When nothing could go, it reads “… is inside …, and a page can’t go inside one of its own child pages.”
Pick a destination outside the pages you are moving.
n left out (open to see why)
Pages were left out of this move for more than one of the reasons above.
Open the move in Unsaved changes: each page left out is listed with its own reason.
Move to… is greyed out: “Too big to move out: Confluence can’t move a page with more than 1,000 pages beneath it”
Every selected page has more than 1,000 items beneath it, so none of them can go into another page or space.
Select other pages too, or move some child pages out of these first.
A page in Move to… is marked Moving or Already here, and can’t be chosen
Moving marks the pages you are moving, since a page can’t go under itself. Already here marks the parent they are in now.
Choose another page, or the space’s top level.
A space is missing from Move to…
The popup lists the spaces you can see that have a home page, and leaves out archived ones.
Check your access to the space in Confluence. To move pages into it you also need to be able to move pages there, or Confluence will refuse those moves at save.
A page I just created or renamed doesn’t show in the search / No pages match.
Finding a page by title uses Confluence search, which can trail very recent changes by a few seconds.
Clear the search and browse to the page instead, opening each level with ›. The tree is read directly from Confluence and shows changes at once.
In the ••• dialog, Move to… opens a small drop-down instead of the full popup
The ••• dialog is a popup already, and another can’t open on top of it.
Nothing is missing: pick the space at the top, browse or search for the page, choose First or Last, and click the page to move them there. For the full popup, open Page Order from the space sidebar or Apps.
Every page here is waiting to move somewhere else.
You moved all of this parent’s child pages to other parents. They are still here in Confluence, but in Unsaved changes they are on their way out, so the list has nothing left to show.
Save to complete the moves, or cancel one with its × in Unsaved changes to bring its pages back.
Saving
A save runs as you, in stretches, while your tab stays open. Each page succeeds or fails on its own, so one refusal never blocks the rest.
That’s n pages moving to new parents. One save can move up to 1,000: cancel some with × and move them in a second save.
One save makes at most 1,000 page moves, and moves to new parents are never split across saves. Save changes is unavailable until you are under the limit.
Use the × on a move in Unsaved changes to cancel it, save, then make that move again.
… This save makes the first 1,000; sort again afterwards to finish. / That was the first 1,000 moves: about n more are still to do. Sort again and save to finish.
Your rearranging needs more than 1,000 moves. The save makes the first 1,000 and stops there on purpose.
Open the parent, sort again (or drag again) and save. Only what is still out of place is planned, so each round finishes more.
This save changes n parents; one save can change up to 100. Save some of the changes first, then the rest.
The changes touch more than 100 parents and destinations, the most one save handles. Nothing was saved.
Cancel some moves with ×, or Discard and work through the parents over two saves.
These pages changed since you opened them, so nothing was saved.
Before saving, the app re-reads every parent your changes touch. One of them no longer matches what you were shown — someone moved, added or removed a page — and the app won’t save over their change. The same banner appears when you go back to a parent you rearranged and its order in Confluence has changed meanwhile.
Press Load the latest order. It discards your unsaved changes and shows what Confluence has now; make your changes again and save.
n pages moved. n pages couldn’t be moved: “…”, “…”. They may be restricted, or you may not have permission.
Confluence refused those pages: a page restriction, or no permission to move pages in the destination space. Everything else saved. Up to three pages are named, then “and n more”.
Check the named pages’ restrictions, or your permission in the other space, then move or sort them again.
n pages couldn’t be moved: “…”. Confluence can’t move a page with more than 1,000 pages beneath it, not even with its own Move. Move some of its child pages out first.
The page crossed the 1,000-item limit after it was counted (search can trail very recent changes), so it wasn’t marked before you saved.
Move some of its child pages out first, then move it.
n pages couldn’t be moved: “…”. followed by Confluence’s own reason
Confluence rejected the move as invalid and gave a reason, which the app passes on as it is. A title taken in the destination after you planned the move, for example, reads “A content with the name(s) … already exist(s) in the space …”. For a page that was to be renamed, the reason can start “Couldn’t rename it to …” (it stayed put), or “It was renamed to … but not moved.” (it has its new title, in its old place).
Read Confluence’s reason, fix that in Confluence, then move the page again.
Stopped after 500 parents; open a page further down and sort from there for the rest.
Include every level below sorts at most 500 parents in one sort.
Open a page further down the branch and sort from there with Include every level below again.
Not saved. Confluence is responding too slowly, so the save stopped. n pages moved before it stopped; the list shows the order now.
Three stretches of the save in a row got nowhere, even after waiting and retrying. Pages already moved stay moved.
Wait a few minutes, then sort or move again and save: only what is still out of place is planned. If the list also shows “These pages changed since you opened them…”, that change is this save’s own — press Load the latest order to start from where things are now.
Not saved. Confluence is busy. Wait a minute and try again. / Not saved. You don’t have permission to do that here. / Not saved. That page no longer exists, or you can no longer see it.
Confluence refused a read the save depends on: rate-limited, not allowed, or gone. If any pages had already moved, the message adds how many.
For “busy”, wait a minute; otherwise check the page in Confluence. Then save again.
That parent has too many pages to sort at once.
The new order is for a parent with more than 50,000 child pages, past the app’s safety stop. See Limits.
Move some of its child pages under other parents first, then sort what is left.
Confluence returned … / Something went wrong.
Confluence answered with an error and no explanation the app could pass on, for example a server error that outlasted the app’s retries.
Wait a few minutes and try again. If it keeps happening, send the message to support with what you were doing.
I closed the tab while it was saving
A save runs only while your tab drives it, so closing the tab stops it. Pages already moved stay moved.
Open the parent again: the list shows the order as it is now. Sort or move again and save; only what is still out of place is planned.
Leave without saving? Your unsaved changes will be lost.
You pressed Close in the ••• dialog, or Choose another space on the Apps page, with changes not yet saved.
Stay keeps them on screen so you can save; Leave without saving drops them. Nothing has reached Confluence either way.
I need to undo a save
There is no undo, as in Confluence itself. That is why every change is listed in Unsaved changes first: each move with its pages, and each reordered page with its old and new position.
Sort or drag the pages back, or move them back with Move to…, and save. A page renamed on its way to another space keeps its new title until you rename it in Confluence.
License
The license is checked when the app opens, from any of its three entry points.
Page Order needs an active subscription on this site. Ask your Confluence admin to start a trial or subscribe from Manage apps.
Atlassian reports this site’s license as inactive: a trial ended, or the subscription lapsed. It is not about your own permissions; the app is unavailable to everyone on the site until it is active again. Your pages are untouched, and their order is Confluence’s own.
Ask a Confluence site admin to start a trial or subscribe. The Atlassian Marketplace listing has the options. Page Order is free for teams of 10 or fewer, but even then it runs only while the site’s subscription is active. Then open the app again.
